Mosul has recently been decimated in the battle between the US-led coalition with The Islamic State, with its monuments, great works of art, cultural centers, and artists themselves destroyed. One young man, Risam, who carries on the craft of sketching he learned from his father, struggles against war and state neglect to keep Mosul’s tradition of creative culture alive. Recounting his journey into the arts, survival of ISIS rule and the war against them, and his travels abroad show his city through his art, he is interviewed in the streets and studios of Mosul by local journalist Aya. Risam’s story is woven in with history of Iraq’s art and politics from Nada Shabout, an Iraqi-American art scholar. Narrated by Sam Kimball.
